Eaglercraft is a port of Minecraft Java Edition compiled to run natively in a web browser using TeaVM and a custom WebGL compatibility layer built by lax1dude. Unlike unofficial HTML5 clones, it runs actual Minecraft code — meaning authentic physics, terrain generation, and gameplay. No account, no launcher, no admin permissions needed.

Offline Downloads

Take Eaglercraft anywhere — no internet required.

Each Eaglercraft client is available as a self-contained .html file you can save locally and open directly in any browser — even on a device with no internet access. The entire game engine, assets, and UI are bundled into that single file. Worlds are stored in your browser's local storage and persist between sessions.

Vanilla Clients

The closest thing to real Minecraft Java Edition in a browser.

Vanilla builds are compiled directly from Minecraft Java Edition source using TeaVM, then rendered through lax1dude's OpenGL-to-WebGL emulator. The result is authentic Minecraft — not a clone. Block physics, crafting recipes, mob AI, and world generation all behave identically to the desktop version they're based on.

WASM vs JavaScript

Which build type is right for your device?

WASM (WebAssembly) compiles the game to near-native machine instructions that your CPU executes directly, bypassing the JavaScript interpreter entirely. On most hardware this means 30–60% higher frame rates, smoother chunk loading, and less lag on busy servers. The JS build remains the fallback if WASM causes a blank screen or freezing.

Eaglercraft connects to multiplayer servers over WebSocket (wss://) rather than a standard TCP connection, which means it works through firewalls that block traditional Minecraft. Partnered servers on this launcher are tested for stability and low latency — no dead IPs or abandoned lobbies. Just copy and paste into the in-game Direct Connect screen.

Browser Compatibility

What actually runs Eaglercraft well — and what doesn't.

Eaglercraft needs WebGL for rendering and WebSocket for multiplayer. Both are supported in every major desktop browser released after 2018. The WASM builds additionally require SharedArrayBuffer, which Chrome and Firefox enable by default — Edge does too, but some school-managed configurations may block it. Mobile browsers technically work but touch controls and performance are poor enough that desktop is strongly recommended.

Most Eaglercraft problems come down to three things: an outdated browser, a school network blocking WebSockets, or a WASM build that won't initialize. The fixes are usually simple — here are the ones that solve 90% of reported issues without needing any outside help.

  • Can't connect to servers? Your network may block wss:// — try a different network

PvP Tips for 1.8

Get better at Eaglercraft 1.8 combat faster.

Eaglercraft 1.8 uses the pre-1.9 combat system — no attack cooldown, no sweep attack. Winning comes down to strafing, timing, and muscle memory. The browser adds a small layer of input latency compared to desktop Minecraft, so adjusting your playstyle slightly is worth it when starting out.

  • Spam-click is viable — there's no cooldown in 1.8

The Origin of Eaglercraft

How Eaglercraft Began

From a personal challenge in 2020 to millions of players.

Eaglercraft was created by a developer known as lax1dude, who started the project in 2020 after browsers dropped Java applet support in 2016 — which had been the only way to run Minecraft in a browser. Rather than accepting that browser Minecraft was impossible, lax1dude reverse-engineered the game and used TeaVM to compile its Java bytecode into JavaScript. The first stable release came in February 2022 and included only multiplayer. Within months, TikTok videos showing Eaglercraft running on school Chromebooks racked up millions of views, and the game exploded in popularity among students worldwide.

How It Works Technically

Why Eaglercraft is a real port, not just a Minecraft clone.

Most "browser Minecraft" sites are simple HTML5 clones with basic block mechanics. Eaglercraft is different: it runs actual Minecraft Java Edition code compiled to JavaScript using TeaVM, an ahead-of-time Java-to-JavaScript compiler. lax1dude also built a full OpenGL 1.3 to WebGL 2.0 compatibility layer, which lets Mojang's original rendering engine run in a browser canvas with minimal modification. Multiplayer is bridged via a custom proxy plugin (EaglerXServer) that converts the browser's WebSocket connection to the raw TCP connection Minecraft servers expect.

How the project grew beyond one developer.

After lax1dude's original releases, the open-source nature of Eaglercraft allowed community developers to extend it significantly. ayunami2000 contributed to EaglercraftX 1.8, adding proximity voice chat via WebRTC. PeytonPlayz595 independently ported Minecraft 1.12.2 to the same browser-based framework, bringing the World of Color update — terracotta, concrete, new biomes, and updated combat — to the browser. Despite DMCA pressure from Mojang halting official development, community-maintained versions continue to be actively played and updated.
